Toothpick Cactus
The Toothpick Cactus (Mammillaria gracilis) is a small. globular cactus native to Mexico. Here are some care tips for this cute little cactus:
Light:
- Provide bright light. but avoid direct midday sun which can scorch the plant.
- An east or west-facing window is ideal for indoor plants.
Water:
- Allow the soil to fully dry out between waterings.
- In summer. water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry.
- Reduce watering in winter to once a month or less.
- Err on the side of underwatering. as this cactus is prone to rot from overwatering.
Soil:
- Use a well-draining cactus/succulent soil mix.
- Add extra perlite or coarse sand to improve drainage.
Temperature:
- Warm temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C) in summer.
- Cooler temperatures around 50-60°F (10-15°C) in winter.
- Avoid freezing temperatures.
Fertilizer:
- Feed with a balanced. diluted fertilizer every 2-3 months during the growing season.
- No fertilizer is needed in winter.
Repotting:
- Repot every 2-3 years in spring. using a container with excellent drainage holes.
- Don't bury the plant too deeply as the stem can rot.
