Here are some care tips for barrel cactus (Ferocactus species):
Light:
- Barrel cacti need full. direct sunlight. Provide at least 6-8 hours of direct sun per day.
- If growing indoors. place in a bright. sunny window facing south or west.
Water:
- During the growing season (spring-fall). water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry.
- Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to avoid rot.
- In winter. reduce watering to once a month at most.
- Excellent drainage is critical to prevent rot.
Soil:
- Use a well-draining cactus/succulent soil mix.
- Amend with additional grit like coarse sand. perlite or pumice.
Temperature:
- Ideal temperatures are 70-90°F (21-32°C) during the day in summer.
- In winter. cooler temps of 50-60°F (10-15°C) are preferable.
- Avoid freezing temperatures.
Fertilizer:
- Feed every 2-3 months during the growing season with a balanced. diluted fertilizer.
- No fertilizer is needed in winter when dormant.
Repotting:
- Repot barrel cacti every 2-3 years in late spring.
- Use a container with drainage holes that is just slightly larger than the current one.
Barrel cacti are slow-growing but can eventually reach 2-3 feet tall and wide. Their round. ribbed shape helps them store water. Avoid overwatering and provide excellent soil drainage. Let them have a winter resting period as well.
