Water:

- Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to avoid rot.

- In winter. reduce watering to once a month at most.

- Excellent drainage is critical to prevent rot.

Soil:

- Use a well-draining cactus/succulent soil mix.

- Amend with additional grit like coarse sand. perlite or pumice.

Temperature:

- Ideal temperatures are 70-90°F (21-32°C) during the day in summer.

- In winter. cooler temps of 50-60°F (10-15°C) are preferable.

- Avoid freezing temperatures.

Fertilizer:

- Feed every 2-3 months during the growing season with a balanced. diluted fertilizer.

- No fertilizer is needed in winter when dormant.

Repotting:

- Repot barrel cacti every 2-3 years in late spring.

- Use a container with drainage holes that is just slightly larger than the current one.

Barrel cacti are slow-growing but can eventually reach 2-3 feet tall and wide. Their round. ribbed shape helps them store water. Avoid overwatering and provide excellent soil drainage. Let them have a winter resting period as well.
