Melocactus Guaricensis (no Pot)
Melocactus guaricensis. also known as the Turk's Cap Cactus. is a unique cactus native to Venezuela. Here are some care tips:
Light:
- Provide bright. direct sunlight. At least 6 hours of direct sun per day is ideal.
- Can tolerate some light shade. but too little light will cause poor growth.
Water:
- Allow the soil to fully dry out between waterings during the growing season (spring-fall).
- Reduce watering in winter to once a month or less when the plant is dormant.
- Good drainage is essential to prevent rot. Never allow it to sit in water.
Soil:
- Use a well-draining cactus/succulent potting mix.
- Amend with extra perlite. pumice or coarse sand for enhanced drainage.
Temperature:
- Warm temperatures of 70-90°F (21-32°C) in summer are ideal.
- In winter. cool temps of 50-60°F (10-15°C) will allow it to rest.
- Avoid freezing temperatures.
Humidity:
- Prefers low humidity levels below 40%.
- Good airflow around the plant can help prevent rot.
Fertilizer:
- Feed every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer.
- No fertilizer needed in winter.
The Turk's Cap has a distinctive woolly cephalium on top that produces small reddish flowers and offsets. Let it become quite dry before watering and provide excellent drainage. It's a unique. slower-growing cactus.
